| CENTERS OF EXCELLENCE |
| Brittany is ranked 5th among French regions for the number of its researchers, behind the Ile-de-France,
Rhône-Alpes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and Midi-Pyrénées, with over 4,000 researchers in the public sector
and at least that many in industry.
Finistère, for its part, has some 1,400 researchers in the public sector, divided between Brest (with more than 1,250),
Roscoff, Quimper and Concarneau.
Research as such plays a vital role in Finistère's economic and social development. It is potentially a generator of innovation
and is one of the area's major attractions.
In the Département, we have many Centers of Excellence:
|
marines sciences
and techniques |
| The Brest center encompasses numerous other skill centers including the Université de Bretagne Occidentale
(University of Western Brittany or UBO) -
and:
European University
Institute of the Sea (IUEM) - ,
French Institute for the Exploitation
of the Sea (IFREMER) - ,
Navy's Hydographic and Oceanographic

Ecole Nationale for Telecommunications (ENSTB) - ,
Ecole Nationale for Engineers in BREST
(ENIB) - -
which works in such areas as underwater acoustics and radar.
It is worth noting that IFREMER is the most important site of the Brest Center of Excellence, with 740 employees.
